Help?!

I am in dire need of any/all of your advice. I started Grumpy Owl, well a few stitches anyway.

You've all heard me say that the background thread blends in with the color of the fabric. Soooo. Should I even bother stitching it? Or should I just stitch the owl? I'm torn and I'm so used to following these charts to the letter that I am paranoid about making a mistake. Or just making it look hideous. On the other hand, stitching the background may just be redundant. Ugh I have no idea.

Here's the fabric with the stitches that I've already done. (Don't worry, I can't see them either, LOL)

And here's the picture of the owl.

I value all of your opinions very much. I'm pretty sure you've all figured out you're not going to offend me... Tell me whatever you think!! PLEASE AND THANK YOU ALL!! :-)

  1. I would ditch the background or pick another color to make the background. I'd probably ditch it though. It shouldn't affect your counting as if you get that first stitch of the owl you can just count from that point. Good luck!

  2. I have this chart too, and I'm planning on getting a dyed fabric and not stitching the background. I think your fabric is perfect, and I would just stitch the owl.

  3. I'd go for the owl. I've bought several HAEDs that I plan on leaving off a solid color background by stitching it on fabric of a similar color.

  5. As the fabric matches the background colour anyway I would just stitch the owl. I think he'll stand out more then too. It looks a great project, good luck with it :-)

  6. Honestly I wouldn't bother stitching the background. It blends in completely with your fabric! I've actually done this on purpose in the past, where I pick a fabric color exactly the same as the background so I wouldn't have to stitch all that massive space. The owl looks really cute, can't wait to see him come to life! :D

  7. The fabric is great for this. I say leave out the background and just do the owl. He is adorable by the way.

  8. Actually....I think the fabric is great for this piece! If it were up to me ...and I really wanted to do the background, I'd keep this piece of fabric for something where it's gorgeousness can be appreciated. You're going to be covering it up with stitches ...so why use such a lovely shaded piece? On that piece of fabric...I'd just do the owl....

  9. I wouldn't stitch the background. The fabric itself is so beautiful that it's worth being seen. And I think the owl would look great on that fabric.

  10. Usually I'm a afan of leaving backgrounds out, but this one doesn't seem to be shaded at all and the transition to the owl looks very easy as well...so I'd say leave out the background, go for the bird!

  11. Your choice of fabric is so good that it's matching the background colour :) I personally would not stitch the background and just keep the cutie owl.

  12. I would agree with a number of comments here. If using this piece of fabric I would just stitch the owl. If you are really concerned about making an error and want to stitch the background I would use a plain fabric and keep this for something else. Also I use to be like you, I could even contemplate changing a pattern not even the colours but I eventually took that leap and it isn't as scary or disastrous as I thought it would be.

  13. The fabric is beautiful Caitlin. I wouldn't stitch the background. If you really want to stitch the background I would use just a plain piece of fabric.

  14. Could you possibly count over to where the owl begins and stitch a bit there to see how you like the look without the background? :) I personally wouldn't bother stitching the background myself, but if you try it out you might find what works best for you. :D

  15. There's no way I'd stitch all that background! The owl is great and I think his colours will look amazin against the fabric you have chosen.
